Akasha is honored to present the "Lecturer Style" 45 rpm single featuring one of Jamaica's foundation artists, Ranking Joe, and one of Jamaica's newest stars, Ras I-Dre, available on vinyl and digital formats from Happy As A Lark Records this Friday, October 30, 2020!

Like so many expressions of the African diaspora, reggae music is heritage music much like jazz, blues, and hip hop. It maintains a historical legacy of forms and patterns that are passed down from generation to generation.

This lauded Jamaican riddim, affectionately known as Lecturer Riddim, was first used in the late 60's Jamaica. There are two possibilities for the first offering of this riddim, The Fugitives with “The Lecture” and the Soul Agents with “The Lecture”. Since then there have been hundreds of versions of this classic riddim, with Akasha's offering being one of the latest in a long chain of amazing musical topography.

Ranking Joe and Ras I-Dre represent the continuation of the time-honored tradition of toasting over classic Jamaican riddims. We hope that you will enjoy both of the songs on this 45rpm single and the furtherance of a long line of Jamaican vocalists. Make sure you save the date and don't be late! "Lecturer Style" available on vinyl and all digital platforms Friday, October 30th!

about

Akasha Chicago, Illinois

The Akasha sound gives birth to an unmistakable variety of heavy, raw grooves reminiscent of The Skatalites, The Maytals, Heptones, Desmond Dekker and The Wailers.

"Akasha excels at conjuring up memories of reggae’s heyday, hewing close to its stylistic conventions while stretching out enough to incorporate many of its various strains and mutations."
